The Oscars are this week and this is when the film industry gets to come together to celebrate film itself and all the people who help- wait, what? The trailer to Fast and Furious 9 just dropped? Ok, hold on. This seems right so far- Vin is holding the family together, Tyrese is making all his very good jokes, Michelle Rodriguez is being badass. Oh wow, John Cena is in this one as Dom’s brother, that’s exciting. Helen Mirren is back too. WAIT- HOLY SHIT- HAN’S BACK! HAN IS BACK! HAN IS BACK! Fuck the oscars, please give my ticket now please. I fucking love these movies. Also here are movies:

Series:

Monday, Feb. 3:

  • The Lodge + Q&A with Directors- 7pm- Dad’s new girlfriend sucks. I hate her. We get left alone with her one time and people from her past terrorize us at this otherwise sweet-ass lodge. I’ll never call her mom. Angelika

  • The Watermelon Woman- 7:30pm- The first feature film directed by a black lesbian, Cheryl Dunye took that head-on by looking directly at black and queer representation in film. And also she made a great movie. MoMA

  • Color Out of Space- 9:50pm- Richard Stanley finds his true muse in Nicolas Cage after that brief tryst with Marlon Brando. Alamo Drafthouse

Tuesday, Feb. 4:

  • 2020 Oscar Nominated Live Action Shorts- 6:45pm- Real live-action shorts for adults, not those goddamn cartoon shorts for little bitty kids. BAM

  • Parisienne- 7:30pm- A young Lebanese immigrant to Paris struggles after her plans to study at university are derailed. FIAF

  • New Female Prisoner Scorpion #701- 7:30pm- Nami Matsushima is convicted for a murder she didn’t commit. Female Prisoner Scorpions #1-700 better brace themselves. Film Noir Cinema

Wednesday, Feb. 5:

  • And Then We Danced + Q&A with Director- 7pm- Swedish-Georgian film about a member of a traditional Georgian dance ensemble falling for another male member of the ensemble. The dancing is great and also the lead actor is definitely the Timothee Chalamet of Georgia. Quad Cinema

  • Adaptation in 35mm- 7pm- Come watch Nic Cage out-act Meryl Streep and Chris Cooper (but not Brian Cox). It also has my favorite screenplay ever written, so that ain’t bad either. Roxy Cinema

  • August at Akiko’s + Q&A with Director- 7pm- Hawaiian filmmaker Christopher Makoto Yogi directs a dreamy tribute to Hawaiian music that does involve “wild sax”. Nitehawk Prospect Park

Thursday, Feb. 6:

Friday, Feb. 7:

Saturday, Feb. 8:

  • Clueless- 11am- Remember when we liked Stacey Dash. That took a turn. Well, at least we’ll always have Mo’ Money. Metrograph

  • Come to Daddy- 6:30pm- Elijah Wood is really loving how weird he gets to be after the whole Lord of the Rings thing. And I love it. Alamo Drafthouse

  • Rosemary’s Baby in 35 + Intro by Occult Historian- 9pm- This is a real spooky one this time, guys. And even spookier after being put into correct historical context by Mitch Horowitz (who is not the Arrested Development guy). Anthology Film Archives

Sunday, Feb. 9:

  • Oscar Night- 6pm- Easily the best Oscar party in town, no question. All other Oscar parties believe that The Irishman had great CGI and was just the right length and actually wanted to see more of the nursing home segments. Metrograph

  • Ultra-Mega Oscars 2020- 7:30pm- The Ultra-Mega Oscars are the highest evolution of Oscars. Also I heard that all of the other Oscar parties voted for Green Book last year and this year, they’re totally going to vote for Jojo Rabbit. Nitehawk Prospect Park

  • Oscar Party 2020- 8pm- New York’s #1 Oscar party. Also, a lot of the other Oscar parties were saying how Joker is so very brave and should definitely have been nominated for the best picture and actually, it should win that award because it’s so cool and also brave. Roxy Cinema

  • 92nd Annual Academy Awards- 8pm- The classiest Oscar party in the city, and that’s what the Oscars are all about. Also, all the other parties will absolutely try to explain to you why it’s not ridiculous that Ford V. Ferrari was nominated as best movie of an entire year, and in fact, why it is the best movie of an entire year. Syndicated

What Else is Playing:

  • Beanpole

  • Citizen K

  • Incitement

  • Les Miserables

  • Little Women

  • Mephisto

  • Pain & Glory

  • Pandora and the Flying Dutchman

  • The Traitor

  • Zombi Child

What to Plan on:

Angelika is pulling out all the stops for Valentine’s Day- they’re showing Portrait of a Lady on Fire with a Q&A by writer/director Celine Sciamma. Now that’s how you program a goddamn Valentine’s Day, ya losers.
